![]() ![]() ![]() Battery isolators may not be the best way to go if you are designing a new system, but if you want to upgrade an existing system and don't wish to do a total rewiring job then using this Argofet low loss isolator is a practical and economical way to go. When using ARGO FET Battery Isolators, there is no need to also increase the output voltage of the alternator. Some alternators require a B+ voltage at a terminal in order to start charging and this isolator has a special dedicated connection for that purpose. Voltage drop is less than 0,02 Volt at low current and averages 0,1 Volt at higher currents. In contrast with diode battery isolators, FET isolators have virtually no voltage loss. This isolator allows simultaneous charging of three battery banks. So discharging the accessory battery will not result in also discharging the starter battery. Like diode battery isolators, FET isolators allow simultaneous charging of two or more batteries from one alternator without connecting the batteries together. ACRs don't have that liability built in.įunny though, here's the marketing pitch on FET isolators I found when digging around for some info - not sure they even think it's a good choice. If yours ever failed, I would suggest going with the ACR (automatic charging. It's often not even possible to do this, and when you start talking modern engines that may expect to detect/use that output, it can be problematic if it is possible - ie if the isolator fails you kill your engine battery, engine dies even if running (modern engines anyway). Doug, Its easier to have one alternator charge one battery without any isolation. The main problem with isolators is they require peeling the charging lead from your alternator away from the engines electrical system. Even with an isolator it's just gonna try to waste charging amps on the same bad battery (but they lack the intelligence to know to give up). ![]() There isn't an issue with an "old" battery and new one and an ACR unless you have an actually bad/failed battery in the mix, in which case (as you know) essentially an ACR is going to do its best to get both batteries to the same voltage or if the battery is bad enough, quit trying - so what? - you got a bad battery, replace it. I have a sneaking suspicion so do isolators, but honestly I've never dealt with a modern one so can't say. I think either probably works well but the issues you raise with ACRs are generally non issues. I'm from the Field Engineering side of the electronics business, the FET isolator was my choice. ACR's use mechanical relays, which are subject to "wear and tear". Additionally, FET isolator's are "solid state" they have no moving parts to wear out. So an old battery and a new one doesn't cause any issues. FET isolator isolates both batteries from each other, no current can flow from one battery to the other, uneven voltage levels aren't an issue. ACR's sense voltage, and will cut off and on while they try to charge both batteries equally as long as both batteries voltage is above a set level. You can get current flow from one battery to the other which will cause the relay to open. But they do not isolate one battery from the other during charging, they parallel the two batteries just like a battery switch. ACR's basically perform the same function as a battery switch, only it is done automatically. ACR's are Automatic Charging Relays, they use relays for isolation. FET isolators use Field Effect Diodes for isolation. On Orders over $800 pays the charges - You will not be charged anything for duties or customs brokerage fees.FET Battery Isolators are NOT also known as an "ACR". It provides priority for charging only the starter battery first. Orders under $800 do not receive any customs charges by US Customs. The ACR-160 combines battery banks for charging and isolates them when charging has stopped. Do I have to pay any customs charges or duties?Ī.
